Procrastination! an econ problem?!
We have been discussing the power of incentives. Please read the article I gave you on procrastination. (I considered making a snarky remark here about not putting it off, but that seemed ridiculous!) When you have completed the article, consider which reason best describes why you procrastinate and an incentive that would keep you from procrastinating. Post that here before 9:30 on Thursday.

ReplyDeleteOne of the main reasons I would procrastinate would be distractions, or not wanting to do what I have to do because I wont enjoy it. I'll put off stuff if I think it's unimportant or I can do hastily. Some distractions are sports or friends, TV or computer, or just being lazy. Once you start, it's hard to stop. A good incentive is deadlines, since it requires me to actually finish things periodically, instead of one big due date, which allows me to put things off. Another good incentive is extra credit if something is turned in early.
Deadlines keep me up to speed on my work. Though I still procrastinate, it is not as bad as it would be if I have deadlines. I put everything off until usually a day before the deadline just because I have a list of things I would rather be doing as oppose to doing the work due in a week. Watching TV, using my computer, spending time with my family, and being with my friends are the biggest things that cause me to put my work on hold and procrastinate.

ReplyDeleteI procrastinate partially because of distractions, but mostly because I underestimate all of the things I need to do. I tell myself that it will take a certain amount of time, so I set aside that amount of time to do it at the last moment possible, and end up rushing through everything. I don't need an incentive as much as I need someone to take away everything that I procrastinate with. If I were to have an incentive, I think having a deadline for small parts of larger things would be most helpful.

ReplyDeleteThe primary reason to my procastination would be having the desires to do somthing that has more "point" or reward. For example: rather than doing a homework assignment that i view as having little reward i could go fishing. In regards to helping prevent me from procrastinating I could be offered a reward, one such as a money bribe; a reward for completing all my homework I would recieve payment. All that is needed is to set out what what was intended to accomplish and not be side tracked by a subconscience mind telling me other.
The main reasons I procrastinate are ignorance and distractions. I often don't consider how long something will take me, and don't realize that waiting last minute will show poor effort in my work. I also view distractions as a large part of my procrastination. Like, right now, I am across from my best gal-pal having a slumber party, trying my best not to go to the other room and watch movies. I do try, but i don't always succeed in ignoring the exciting distractions that lead to my failure. The reason I feel I can ignore the distractions and my ignorance is through the fact that if I do not try now, I will never succeed in learning and making good grades, which is important than me. However, it would be easier to ignore these things if the work I was given was a litter more fun!
ReplyDeleteI procrastinate because I do not feel like doing the task at that time. Usually, I only mean to distract myself for a few minutes but it turns into 45 minutes or an hour. Also, if I procrastinate for a longer period of time or over a course of a few days, when I think of the task I need to accomplish, I push it aside and tell myself that I can do it later. The more I procrastinate on one task the easier it is to put it off with less guilt. An incentive that would help me not procrastinate is a guaranteed amount of time that it would take me to finish the task that I am procrastinating. So a more realistic incentive is getting a pet micropig.

ReplyDeleteMy main reason for procrastination is because of distractions. If I have something to do that I do not want to, I will take a 5 minute break and do it after. That 5 minute break usually turns into hours and I end up not doing it. Besides self made distractions, I tend to have a busy schedule with other school work, baseball, church, etc. For example, I did not post this until less than an hour before it's due, which is procrastination. I was planning on posting it last night, but got busy with driving my brother to a lesson, eating dinner, watching american idol, showing, etc. An incentive to make me procrastinate less would be money. Just like on Freakanomics, if I was bribed with x amount of money the sooner I finished a task, I would be more likely to do it with less procrastination.

I procrastinate mostly because i dont feel the task at hand is important. If the task has nothing to do with my survival or something that would benefit me immediately, its likely i wont be moved to do it. In other words, if there is no urgency, count me out. Money incentives would probably help me, or if i know that there is something that will benefit me directly, immediately, im most likely to take care of the task at hand.

ReplyDeleteI procrastinate most of the time because I do not think that doing the work assigned will be enjoyable or I get distracted. I get distracted by TV, Friends, even family. Other times, I forget about the task that I am supposed to do. I have learned to handle my procrastination by writing things down and making a schedule for myself, for instance, I do my homework as soon as I get home, so that I will have the rest of the night to do things I enjoy or talk to my friends. This has helped a lot.
I procrastinate because I distract myself with material things. I think I'm really good at multitasking, but the truth is that I'm not. I come home and think to myself, "It's only 4..I have so much time." Before I know it, it's almost 11 and I have a lot of work to do.

I procrastinate because I know I can finish it in a small amount of time even if it is poor work. I tend to procrastinate things that I know wont count a lot for my grade and I think that I can get it done during other classes or lunch. I mostly procrastinate because I'm tired or if I think something is difficult to the point where I don't understand. If I don't understand something I definitely won't do it. I also realize how much I have to do but instead of doing it, I just think about how much I have to do which freaks me out more.
ReplyDeleteI procrastinate because I weigh some things higher than others. If it is not important to me, I put it off for things that interest me more in doing. I figure it will get done sooner or later. An incentive that might keep me from procrastinating might be having the thing I have to do be more fun or interesting.
